The benefits of a blog in 2023

A blog post, online article, web content... whatever you call it, written digital content is still as important as video.

I love writing. So for me, this blog is an outlet. I'm using it to express my thoughts, ideas and experiences in marketing, comms and media.

As a media format, blogs offer talented storytellers a platform to reach, attract and maintain audience attention.

I often advise and create written digital content for clients. Mainly to drive traffic from email marketing and social, but to also better their comms and build relationships with their target audience.

One strategy of using blogs for small businesses - say a coffee shop - is as news feed. Often sharing the same type of content as your Facebook and Instagram, but with a little more detail. But I'll also often write dedicated posts around specific keywords I want the business to be known for; 'independent coffee shop' or 'the best coffee', for example.

When it comes to digital marketing, I approach it with the same logic as physical retail - the more positive time your customer spends in your store, immersing themselves with your products and brand, the higher the likelihood they will spend.

Using a blog to communicate news and any changes to your products or services helps to keep your website structure tidy too; your main pages remaining the same for user-ability ease, your blog becoming the go-to place on your website for the latest information.

As with social media, what to write about centres around a content strategy - all that really means is writing about what you love. Use your blog to share what you and what your business stand for, get that article on the screesn of your target audience and you will begin to soon reap the rewards.

In my very first marketing job, social media mainly meant Twitter. Today not only is a presence necessary, the goal is more and more reach.
